VIYONI SUMNYAANA:
In every short comings there will be a hidden completion and vice versa. This truth hit me hard while perusing Viyoni sumnyaana, a chapter from Varahamihira’s Hora Sashtra. It also helped me realize that there is a way off between what was actually written and what we as a society have understood.
Sandhrobhagatcirasbagasmaanaroobamis a word in the sloga. We can understand the meaning of it if we split the word as Sandhra ubhagat thvirasamaana smaana roobam. It would then say, ‘the one who would attain the thivarasa portion of a standing moon’. This Thivarasa can have two different meanings – thviyana rasa portion (1/6th) and thvirasa portion (1/12th). I cannot insist enough that one can understand the true meaning of it purely through experience.
Such minutiae and sensitive ciphers need to be personally felt and not through speeches by those who simply spread what they understood. The Viyoni sumnyaana in Hora sashtra discusses the details on the births of all the living things on Earth barring human beings. Although it may seem trivial and sometimes meaningless to the untrained eye, it is actually a treasure chest of valuable information and I say this from my personal experience.
My teachers who taught me the basics of astrology still say that they are learning the Hora sashtras. One can only keep studying it but never complete learning all about it for it is deep with mysteries and enigmas.
ASTROLOGY AND PRASNA:
Astrology is a part of a whole, shared with the following five: sisha, vyaagaranam, sandhas, niruktham, and kalbam. It is essential that a brahmana learns this. The vedas were written for yagams. A yaga is based on time and since astrology uses time, it should only be logical that it is considered as one among the six mentioned earlier. One who is well versed in astrology will be graced with virtue, happiness, material riches, and home– the four boons of life.
In another sense, our ancestors categorized astrology into six different aspects namely horoscope, gola, nimittha, prasna, muhurtha, and ganitha. Among these, there are many versions of prasna that are prevalent among us today. Although we can have a brief idea about our past lives through horoscopes, it is only with prasna that one can have a clear picture of it.
Ok then, what exactly is this prasna?
Prasna is a tool in astrology that helps an individual or a family to properly look into the past records and rectify any ill with the help of all the other tools and pave way for a happier future for the individual or for the family. In order to perform this rectification, one must have a profound knowledge in the field.
Let me give an example for this.
Once, a king had a severe headache. No matter how hard the royal doctors tried, they could not help him. Finally, he came to the sage Agathiyar. With his divine sense, the sage saw the reason behind the king’s ailment. A toad had entered the king’s nasal cavity and lodged itself in his brain. According to kabala sashtra, if the sage was to open the head of the king for medical procedures, there was a risk to the latter’s life in that the toad might move when it sensed the outer air.
The sage was rather dumbstruck with the pickle he was in. Fortunately for him (and the king), his assistant, therai siddha was there to save the day. He placed a pitcher full of water in front of the toad and in an instant, the toad leaped into the water and the king was left unharmed. Here, the same wit and presence of mind is required for anyone to make analysis and calculations in prasna.
ASTROLOGY AND MEDICINE:
Astrology is not a science like physics or chemistry, rather a science like knowledge. When one learns something, he/she is called a genius. Knowledge is not just knowing something. But one who has knowledge on astrology can easily pass for a genius. This is proved by the fact that the modern scientist’s discoveries were said a thousand years ago by our ancestors in simple slogans.
Astrology is not related to the outer world. It is a mirror to look into the inner lives of every human being and also a remedy to repair and reshape our lives for the better. It is also home to the solutions to many ailments to the physical health. Ayurvedic doctors know well that they should never treat their patients before using astrology on their patients. Excessive sadness and greed are considered as mental illnesses and they affect the human body in an adverse way.
Many paranormal problems that are a result of activities like bewitchments, ghosts, etc., do not have a solution in the medical world. They are strictly related to the soul and hence astrology becomes the only solution to this. Let us see more about this topic in the following chapters.
